How to Mix and Match Party Supplies

Who doesn't love going to a store and seeing a sale?! I think one of my favorites is the mix and match ones. You know, like when you go Victoria's Secret and get underwear 5 for $25. It can cost a little more than a regular pack of underwear but why do you buy that one? Choices! Everyone likes to pick and choose the items they like best. You do it for your panties, why not do it for your parties too? (See what I did there? Hah.)

This Christmas I decided to challenge myself by creating a completely unique party scheme using easy to find, store bought supplies- and you can too! #christmasparty #partyplanning #holidayparty

This Christmas I decided to challenge myself by creating a completely unique party scheme using easy to find, store bought supplies- and you can too! I went to my local Target and picked up nearly everything in their Christmas party supplies aisle. I also added in some other items I loved, like this star banner I got from Old Navy and some napkinsI got from Marshall's (similar). I also added in some cups and stirrers I made.

Matchy Matchy

First let's take a look at all my supplies while they hang out in their clique.

Santa round plates. Santa shaped plates. Santa letter place cards. Santa paper fan. Striped cups. Santa beverage napkins. Striped napkins. Jolly ornament. Merry Christmas stirrer from Target. Red Pom Pom stirrer and clear cups made by me.

Snowflake napkins. Snowman plate. Snowflake cups. Merry Christmas stirrer from Target. Pom Pom  stirrer, bell stirrer, and clear cups made by me.

star banner. Jolly napkins (similar). Merry Christmas stirrer from Target. Pom Pom stirrer, bell stirrer, and clear cups made by me.

Paper fan. Polka dot tablecloth. Paper ornament garland. Happy Holidays plate. Colorful writing plate. Colorful writing napkin. Holly jolly napkin. Pom Pom stirrers, bell stirrers, and clear cups made by me.

Aren't they a little boring? Nothing stands out and they feel a little cookie cutter, especially the Santa and the snowman.

Mix it Up

Simply by trying different combinations of store items, you can create a one-of-a-kind look. So, what's the secret to successfully mixing and matching supplies?

You need to have a plan.

In an ideal world, you'd just grab all the things you like the most, and they'd come together in perfect harmony. This, however, is the real world. Sometimes you grab your favorite items and they don't mesh together... at all. Take a look at the supplies offered and think about what you like and why. Is it the design? The color? How functional it is? Think about how all these items will fit together and see which ones work best.

Find a focal point.

Pick the piece you like the most or the one that is the most complex first. Then, see that works best with that piece.  Since this piece will be most important and/or hardest to match, you want to make sure the other items fit in perfectly with it.

Mix patterns, neutrals and solid colors.

To avoid pattern overload, balance out complex patterned pieces with solid colors or simple patterns like stripes. These simpler pieces will enhance the look of your party by complimenting your more patterned pieces instead of competing with them. People's eyes will want a place to rest! Having too many things to look at will overwhelm your guests.

Look at the big picture.

This is a little harder to do, but super important. You have to look at how each item looks as a whole, not as individual pieces. What does that mean? Well maybe you don't like that bowl pattern as much as another one at the store, but it fits in better with your whole look. It's important to recognize that not every piece has to be your absolute favorite one, but it'll have to fit in well to give you the overall look you desire.

Don't confine yourself to one store.

To get a really interesting and unique look, browse several different stores or brands to create a one of a kind party pack. This not only gives you more options, but also allows you to find pieces you really love, instead of only finding the best that one store has to offer. To see my top shops for party supplies, check out this blog post.

Don't be afraid to break the rules.

Do you like the way 2 patterns look together, even though they're technically "clashing"? Go for it! Rules are made to be broken when it comes to decorating and sometimes it's fun to try something new and different, even if it's not the trendy or traditional way to do it. Who knows, maybe you'll create your own trend!

Check out what you have.

think the best part of mixing and matching is being able to use what you already have. Before going shopping, take a look at your inventory and see if you can enhance what you already have by mixing in some new pieces. By doing this, you can save time and money on purchasing new items.

Try to find some consistency or pattern in your choices.

The key to being able to successfully mix and match comes from being consistent in some way. This will prevent it from looking like you grabbed any party supplies you could find. What are some factors of consistency that will help you?

Color

One way to keep a party consistent despite different patterns is by choosing a color scheme. Maybe the thing bringing all your items together is that they all have the same 3 colors in them. Or they're all pastels, metallics, etc. Color scheme is probably the #1 way to create a cohesive look. It's also the easiest, so use that to your advantage!

Shape

The shape of an item is a great way to create visual interest, but it's also a catalyst to unintentionally creating a mismatch. If all your items are rounded, a square plate may look out of place.

Style

If all your items are somewhat upscale, using a cheap paper plate will look totally out of place. Think about the type of event and what you want the overall look to be, and go from there!

Quality

Know where to splurge and where to save. For example, expensive straws aren't the best use of money because they'll be tossed away, and a cheaper straw will do the trick. However, it's better to spend a little more on decent plates and utensils. You don't want anyone to have trouble cutting their food or be left with a soggy, drooping plate when it's full of food.

Saving money.

To save money, mix in some cheaper items from the dollar store to match your more expensive designed pieces. Learn more about how to save money (and time!) on party supplies by clicking here

When you've got all your items together, take a look to make sure nothing sticks out like a sore thumb. If it does, you've either got to find something to bring it together or just nix it completely.

How to Plan a Glam Friendsgiving Dinner

It's a well known fact that everyone's favorite part of Thanksgiving is the food. Seeing your crazy aunt is so worth it when you can have her tasty Mac and cheese. But what's the best part of of Thanksgiving weekend? Besides shopping (and not having to work for 4 days!) it's Friendsgiving.  While your grandma is asking when you'll get married, your friends are sharing funny horror stories about the life of a single gal. Or maybe you're spending time together gushing about your friend's new boyfriend. Either way, the pressure is off and you're free to enjoy the food, the drinks and the company. How better to thank your gals for their support than by hosting a glam Friendsgiving dinner? I decked out my dining room with gorgeous golds, pops of pink and orange, and tons of teal. I'll show you how to do it too!

Dress it Up

Since I knew the table decor would be really colorful, I opted for a simple ivory tablecloth to keep it neutral. I added an ivory sequin table runner for a bit of subtle glitz without distracting from all the other decorations.

For the centerpiece, I decided to go with the new hot trend, painted pumpkins! While most people like to use real pumpkins, I opted for fake ones. I find that the real ones always get mushy at the bottom, but these fake ones can be used for years to come! All I had to do was spray them with primer, then a few coats of spray paint.

One of my favorite parts of this table are these pumpkin candle holders. They come in black, but I think they look so much better spray painted gold! It gives them an elegant touch, don't you think? I also scattered some orange votive holders around the table for some extra color and a bit of romance.

I added some flowers, because everyone loves flowers. I got mine from the supermarket, and it was already a tiny little bundle! I just trimmed the ends and stuck it right in the vase. It was easy peasy and really dressed up the table. I also found this really cute desert gems cactus at the supermarket, which is a cute and funky alternative to flowers.

Tablescape

Fun fact- all the tableware is disposable! This means cleanup will be a breeze, but you don't have to sacrifice style. I ran over to my local Party City and picked up these gorgeous gold rim plastic plates, pink and gold plates, and neon pink champagne glasses. They added the perfect pop of color while still keeping it classy. My utensils came from Michaels. They are similar to ordinary disposable utensils, except that they have a really fun handle! The napkins were from Oriental trading as leftovers from my Halloween party

To create the place settings, stack your plates on top of each other and place them in the center of each chair. Take a napkin and place it diagonally with the ridges facing outwards. Stack your utensils on the napkin, placing your spoon first, then your fork and finally your knife. Make sure your knives are all facing the same direction! I created a fan shape to keep it different and interesting. Finally, place your diy mini faux pumpkin piñata in the center. If you want to assign seating, these would be great as place cards too! Just add a strip of paper with each person's name on it.

Since your cups will be empty when people arrive, you have to give them a little flair. To do this, I simply folded up an additional napkin to add a pop of color. Everyone can always use an extra napkin, right?

Napkin Folding Tutorial

1. Place your napkin down on a flat surface. (Put the pattern facing the top- this was my bad for the photo!)
2. Fold in half lengthwise along the straw.
3. Turn the napkin sideways. Fold the corner down towards the bottom along the straw.
4. Flip over and repeat the fold.
5. Take your folded napkin and smooth down the edges.
6. Put the napkins into your glasses with the middle fold facing the back and enjoy!

Set up a Bar Cart

If you've got a bar cart, use it! It's a really simple way to dress up your space and it'll provide some extra room for things like spare cups and drinks. If your home doesn't have room for a bar cart, you've got to check out this folding one. It's cute and sturdy, and packs away easily when not in use! It's the one I use at home and I LOVE IT! Seriously you guys, it's really colorful, strong,  and can be used indoors or outdoors.

Now that you've pulled your bar cart out, you have to dress it up for the occasion! I I covered my cart with sequin table runners and draped my colorful leaf garland on the front for an extra pop of color and to give it a little seasonal fair. I used my teal pumpkin as the focal point of my bar cart, and placed my cute Gather sign from Target on top. I placed my wine bottles around it, along with some champagne glasses.

On the bottom shelf, I put some extra glasses and bottles of wine, but you could also put an ice bucket, your barware, or some extra plates and napkins.

How to Throw a Colorful Halloween Party

Halloween is coming, and I'm just so excited! I still remember the very first Halloween party I had way back in high school. While most other teens liked alcoholic binge fests or home destruction, my party was a classy affair. I had found a magazine with all these fun recipes and Halloween themed treats at the supermarket, and I wanted to make everything! I decided then and there that I needed to have a party. This time, I decided to give the traditional Halloween party a facelift with a fresh color palette. It's fun, glam and has just the right amount of spooky.

To throw a lavish affair on a budget, head on over to Oriental Trading. They've got everything you need to host a haunting affair without breaking the bank! P.S. This is not a sponsored post. I just happen to loooove using Oriental Trading! ;) Be sure to check out my shopping list at the bottom of this post for all the items pictured.

Let's start at the top! For my color scheme, I went with traditional orange and black, mixed in with teal and pink for a fresh and girly twist. I also accented with white and gold to keep it light and add a bit of glam.

Now onto the table setup! I put some candy in my DIY dollar store candy dishes. I only bought two kinds, but Oriental Trading has TONS of different kinds of candy! I think my favorites are these heart candies, which are tasty and so addictive.

Be sure to add some faux piñatas to your table as favors to your guests. They're fun and easy to make while watching tv! I recommend binge watching Friends as you make them.

In the center, I included a teal pumpkin. It's cute, colorful and supports a great cause!

I made this table runner using leftover crepe paper from my faux piñatas and some scotch tape. It was virtually free and can be tossed in the trash when the party is over!

I love this cute and quirky Trick or Treat banner. It comes in two parts, so you can hang it up however works best for you!

For the table, I stacked the plates so that each place setting can get all the colors at once. It adds a festive and spooky touch. Ditto for the forks and straws! Finally, each person gets an orange candy stick to go with it.
